Shorea wood is a tropically grown hardwood that is ideal for outdoor applications. Its characteristics are quite similar to teak wood -- densely grained, heavy, and naturally resistant to rot, mildew, and insects. In fact, due to its high oil content, shorea wood has been used for centuries in ship building and exterior house construction.
If left untreated, shorea wood will naturally weather to a silverish-gray color over time, however its durability and strength will not be affected. If you prefer the natural look of the wood, it is best to apply teak oil (available at most hardware stores) on a regular basis to maintain the color.
