Garden furniture comes in all kinds of styles, designs, patterns, and materials. Choosing which kind best suits your style is the fun part. Cleaning or repairing garden furniture can be one of the more dreary parts of owning garden furniture, but with a few tips, you can make this job a quick, easy, and enjoyable task. Let’s face it – no matter how beautiful your garden furniture looks in the beginning, all things get dirty and worn down with time and exposure. Most garden furniture can be restored to its natural beauty with soap and water, but some garden furniture may need a little bit more work. Some Garden furniture is crafted from high quality materials that limits wear and tear and also keeps the structural integrity from diminishing. One such material is cast aluminum.
If you have patio furniture that has a cloth umbrella and cushions, then soap, water, and a rag are your best friends. Usually this is all that is needed to give the fabric a thorough cleaning. Some fabrics last better than others. It is important to get a high quality fabric if ease in cleaning is important to you. Please remember before you have a garden party to clean off your garden furniture! Nothing is a more offensive to a guest than to sit down to a lovely meal and find that the birds have left garden “gifts” at the seating area. Most people remember to wipe off the garden table, but they often forget the chairs and the umbrellas, which need to be cleaned just as often and thoroughly. The job can be made easier and less daunting by using a garden hose to spray them off and then quickly wipe them down with a rag. Remember to do this more than a few hours before your get together as the cushions may become saturated with water. If this occurs, when a guest sits down on the cushion, their derrière will become drenched! This would produce a most unpleasant and embarrassing experience.
If you have wood furniture, then you may have to perform a few more steps. Unless you like a weathered patina on your furniture, and some do prefer the weathered look, you will need to protect your wood garden furniture in the beginning. Use clear sealants to protect the wood when you purchase it, unless it already has a sealant on it. But when putting the sealant on, avoid painting the screws. Wood contracts and expands and you will usually have to tighten the screws over time. If they have sealant over the top of them, this will make it more difficult to tighten connectors. Some wooden garden furniture only requires oiling. This should be done every 4-6 months in a harsher environment, or annually in a more moderate environment.
You can finish cleaning off your wood furniture with a liquid wood cleaner. If the weather tends to be rainy, windy and harsh in your area, you are probably going to need to clean the furniture every two to three weeks. If you purchased a beautiful garden furniture set, but have found over time that it is looking faded and old, you can freshen it up. Paint does wonders for covering wear and weather worn furniture. If your patio umbrella has faded, and happens to be one solid color, you might consider painting a new design on it with a stenciling pattern. The new paint will not only cover up the faded spots, but will create a brand new design that will automatically update your garden furniture. You can accent the new design with a table cloth, cushion covers, or similar stenciling patterns done on the back of the chair.
Though cleaning and repairing garden furniture might not be at the top of your list, it is a less expensive and more environmentally sound way to improve your outdoor space. Sometimes buying more garden furniture seems like a great idea but, fixing up existing furniture can be fun, less costly, and maybe even produce a more aesthetically pleasing result than buying new. Maintaining your garden furniture will ensure that the furniture’s fun, new look will remain for years to come. Make sure that you put a sealant on your newly painted furniture to protect you time investment in the design.
Creativity in selecting, building, or customizing your garden furniture will make your outdoor space more exciting and enjoyable place to be. The backyard can become an extra outdoor room addition to your home. Garden furniture can create a great place to entertain. It can be a part of family outdoor celebratory traditions. Garden furniture also creates an appropriate space for star gazing and enjoying a romantic evening. Find what you want from your garden space in a clever and artful arrangement of outdoor garden furniture.
