- Durability – how long do you want the set to last?
- Construction- you normally get what you pay for. Make sure to look for well-built furniture. If it is metal, check to make sure the joints are double or triple welded, and make sure the surface is finished with a powder-coating or other protectant. If it is wooden, make sure the hardware is brass or zinc-plated to prevent rust.
- Price- how much are you willing to spend? Is quality more important than getting a great bargain, or are you just looking for the simplest, least expensive option to outfit your patio?
- Materials – different materials require different maintenance. Teak, Shorea, Redwood, and Cedar wood are naturally resistant to the elements. Other woods like pine and oak need to be sealed routinely. Cast aluminum is a great choice, because it cannot rust. Wrought iron needs to have a good powder-coating or other finish on it to endure the outdoors. If you are going with wicker, look for PVC-coated wicker. It will last indefinitely outside.
- Styles - can vary dramatically. If you have a theme or specific look in mind before you begin shopping, you will most likely gravitate to styles you have already decided on.
A collection of your favorite decorating ideas for the outdoors will come in handy while you browse and shop. You can create an idea book fairly easily by perusing decorating magazines and Internet sites and then compiling your favorite options in a binder for easy reference. Allow extra space for notes and swatches of paint, fabric, wood or other materials and you will have a nicely organized collection of your preferences.
