If
you want outdoor
wooden furniture that requires very little maintenance, then you
need to be sure that you buy the right furniture in the first place.
Teak is a favorite wood used for outdoor wooden furniture because
it is naturally resistant to decay and insect infestation –
but for this natural resistance, you often have to pay a high price.
Redwood and cedar are also favorites for outdoor wooden furniture
for the same reason as teak – durability. This durability is
due to natural chemicals in the heartwood (center part of the wood).
The outer part (sapwood), on the other hand does not contain the extractives
that make the wood so durable. Therefore, when you are shopping for
your outdoor wood furniture, you want to be sure that it contains
a large proportion of heartwood rather than sapwood.
And if these durable woods are a little beyond your budget, you can
buy outdoor wooden furniture made out of other woods. Look for outdoor
wooden furniture that has been factory-treated with a preservative.
This factory treatment forces preservative chemicals (like chromated
copper arsenate) deep into the lumber using high pressure. If you
buy outdoor wooden furniture that has been treated with a preservative,
make sure that it has a manufacturer’s guarantee – make
sure that it has a tag that certifies its treatment.
And if both preservative-treated and hardwood outdoor wooden furniture
are beyond your budget, or if you already own furniture, be sure that
you treat it yourself. Use water repellents or preservatives. These
reduce decay and discolorations as well as cracking and warping. Check
with the manufacturer to find out the best way to treat your outdoor
wooden furniture. Consider not just the wood, but also your climate
(the humidity range and the temperature range).
