Outdoor
wood furniture can be quite an investment – outdoor wood
furniture does not always come cheap, but the beauty it can add to
your patio and garden is worth more than money. Of course, as an investment,
you want to be sure that your outdoor wood furniture lasts, and you
therefore must take proper care of it. Here are some tips to help
you increase the lifetime of your outdoor wood furniture:
• Take it in – if possible, do not leave your outdoor
wood furniture out during the winter months if you live in a non-temperate
climate. If you cannot store your outdoor wood furniture indoors try,
to place it beneath a porch or overhang and cover it.
• Use protective covers – if you cannot take your outdoor
wood furniture in, for the season, or even if you know you will not
be using it for a while, cover it! Use waterproof, breathable covers.
Check and make sure that water cannot pool up on top of the covers.
Do not just use plastic bags – moisture can actually get trapped
beneath them, causing your furniture to warp and/or rot.
• Consider the legs – do not just think of the bodies
of your outdoor wood furniture, think of the legs. Chair legs and
table legs that are left in the grass or at the poolside can become
saturated with water. Do not keep your outdoor wood furniture in such
moisture-gathering places for extended periods of time. Or, you can
cover the bottom of the furniture leg with rubberized material.
• Watch out for chemicals – although most of your focus
is likely on the weather and moisture, you should also be aware that
exposure to chemicals and other things (solvents, chlorine, flower
nectar) can harm your outdoor wooden furniture. Be wary, and if you
spill anything on your furniture, be sure to clean it off immediately.
Also, avoid keeping plastic on your furniture for extended periods
of time – it can stick to it and damage the wood finish.
Depending on the climate you live in and the type of outdoor wood
furniture that you have (teak, cedar, pine, etc.), you are going to
need to clean and treat it differently. Woods like pine require a
lot of care if you want it to last, while outdoor wood furniture made
from woods like teak can pretty much take care of themselves.
