If
you want your wooden
garden benches to last for many years to come, you are likely
going to have to fulfill some relatively minor maintenance requirements.
The exact maintenance that you must do depends greatly on both the
type of wood your wooden garden benches are made from as well as the
climate in which you live.
Here are some general tips for caring for wooden garden benches:
• Winterize – it is best to move your wooden garden benches
to a shed or garage during the colder, wetter months. If this is not
an option, place them beneath a covered patio and/or cover them with
a garden furniture cover (a basic garbage bag may actually trap moisture
beneath it…).
• Check for cracks and splinters – high exposure to the
sun can cause some cracking of the wood. Be sure to check your wooden
garden benches regularly for cracks and splinters (you certainly do
not want to find a splinter by sitting on it!).
• Watch out for grass and soil – very likely, your wooden
garden benches are going to be out in your garden or beneath trees.
This means that they will very likely be placed directly on grass
or soil. Both grass and soil can be very moist, and your wooden garden
benches can soak up this moisture, causing the legs to decay. Place
your wooden garden benches up on bricks or flat rocks. And/or be sure
to soak the legs of your wooden garden benches in cups of preservative
at the beginning of each season.
• Stains, paints, and preservatives are a must – you should
reapply a protective coating once every two years. Depending on the
condition of your wooden garden benches, you may need to sand them
down first. Be sure to follow the instructions of both your bench
and the protectant you plan to use.
• Clean regularly – get into the habit of wiping down
your wooden garden benches and other garden furniture with a dry cloth
after each use. Also, wash it off with a wrung out soapy cloth at
least once a month, making sure to dry them off thoroughly afterward.
For the most part, if you keep your wooden garden benches out of
extremes in heat and humidity as well as great fluctuations of heat
and humidity, they should stay in fairly good repair.
